Hortus botanicus (medicinal garden) in the middle of the sea

Now, our virtual trip to Minorca ends up in a tiny island just in the middle of Mahon harbour: The King’s Island or Hospital Island as it has been known along history. The English established there a military hospital in 1711, just at the beginning of their first domination. The hospital has been used until 1964 when it was abandoned, so its buildings have been neglected for almost half a century. Hopefully a new foundation, “Amics de l’Illa del Hospital” (Friends of the Hospital Island) is now leading the restoration of the whole compound.

One of the projects that the foundation has set up is the recovery of the medicinal garden that provided herbs to the Hospital’s pharmacy. This project is being managed jointly with the main conservationist organization in the islands, GOB (or The Balearic Ornithological Group) and it’s been funded by Artiem Hotels. As the plants are now growing, we hope that in a near future we will be able to offer you, in our Wellness Center, a wide variety of medical herbs from this peculiar Hortus Botanicus.
